Marion County - This taxing time is giving Marion County schools a costly economics lesson. Delays and confusion over property taxes has them short on cash and looking to borrow millions of dollars.

Freezing property taxes and delaying payment deadlines is creating a financial upheaval for Marion County’s Schools. Tax money needed to pay teachers, operating costs and construction bills, already weeks late, will arrive even later. It will total tens of millions of dollars less than schools counted on.

Metro Indy Meeting Smog Rules

Here’s some good environmental news via the IndyStar…

WASHINGTON — The central Indiana counties surrounding Indianapolis are on track to be considered in compliance with smog pollution rules, a determination that would remove some pollution restrictions.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said today that air monitoring data for 2004-2006 shows that Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Johnson, Madison, Marion, Morgan and Shelby counties meet the eight-hour air quality standard for ozone.

Radio station to read names of DUI arrestees

Indy gets some “small town” type of news reporting. And maybe this will make people think twice before drinking and driving…it’s worth a shot anyway.

WNOU-FM (93.1) is taking a unique stand against drunken driving in Indianapolis — by reading the names of the previous week’s offenders every Monday during its morning radio show.

“You don’t want to hear your name on this list, do you?” co-host Marco Anselmo asked listeners during the premier segment Monday.

To the tune of Inner Circle’s “Bad Boys” song, hosts of “The Morning Mess” highlighted a handful of drivers charged with DUI last week and quoted details from incident reports.

Marion County Income Taxes Raised

Via the IndyStar…

Amid interruptions, chants of “no new taxes” and an emotional debate, the City-County Council increased the county income tax by 65 percent for Mayor Bart Peterson’s $90 million crime-fighting plan.

The council voted 15-13 to pass the proposal. Two Democrats opposed the plan, and two Republicans joined 13 Democrats to support it. Republican Isaac Randolph cited a conflict of interest and abstained from voting.

The new rate will take effect Oct. 1 and will apply only to people who live in Marion County.
